Default Old School Guildwars Vs. Expansions

My view is that the original proph made GW a good game, while the rest of the expansions just ruined the game and drove many players to different alternatives such as WoW. I like the new content, new maps, w/e but there are also so many different aspects of the game i just dont like. Tell me what you feel in perspective to PvP and PvE,and how the expansions ruined or made the game better

My feeling is that there's only one expansion.

But knowing what you meant to say, the content of Factions and NF were perfectly fine, and added depth and huge amounts of content, though the storytelling wasn't so great. It's well documented and discussed how thousands of skills and their endless combinations have led to the morass that is PvP, and how the constant rebalances leads to frustration to the casual PvEer who doesn't know what their same build is going to be like on a monthly basis, and leads to some crazy totally not intended god and farming builds, many of which have actually become virtually necessary to cope with the insane grind that is titles.

I don't look at Guild Wars like that. As far as i'm concerned Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North are one game. Each part has its pros and cons, but as a whole I love the game Guild Wars.

Imagine no new content since the release 4 years ago.... No one would be playing this game anymore....

They could have made a few things better/different, but the new campaings and the expansions kept people playing GW.

As a PvP player, i just feel that the new expansions added nothing but tons of overpowered skills, unbalanced builds, and thousands and thousands of updates to skills. I mean how many of the original skills are still intact without anet nerfing or buffing the shit out of it? i mean i understand some skill buffs such as RoJ (no one cared about the crappy old one), but then they just completely nerf some other skills that wasnt that overpowered from the start. I enjoyed playing a lot of the proph stuff, however PvE is boring, but to me, all PvE is boring. I remember when it actually took skill to get certain titles, but now there are titles such as the sunspear title, which requires you to do hrs and hrs of mindless killing, and honestly, the game is becoming to the point where whoever spends the most time, will have the most money, and also the most titles, but back in proph, i felt having a title was an acutual accomplishment, and i may display it proudly, but now, ever shitter out there can have a title, and it just kind of ticks me off

I mean i like the new content of the game, but some of the stufff i just completely disagree with, and it all goes back to my rant with the title and such.

I also like some of the new skills, but did anet think before making the original Searing Flames, that skill was WAY too overpowered, and like even reading through the description, i feel like anet is just pulling some bs on us.

There are also a lot of skills that are just way more useful than some other skills. I thought the game was to have many many MANY different combination of skills, but now everyone runs the same builds. Wars run DH Shock Axe, or War Endurance, Monks have PnH and WoH, Necros run LC, Rangers are Mel Shot or Burning Arrow, etc... I mean i see these builds all over the place, and people tend to in a way abuse the living shit out of them. Theres no originality, and even though anet tried to balance the skills, some skills are just still WAY better than another skill.

I have 25 skills bought with my PvE war, and honestly, for PvP, i use 15 at most...

Many of the things that are "wrong" with GW are down to requests by players and personal choice.

It is not compulsory to endlessly grind titles or to farm for months at a time so as to afford fancy armour or weapons.
All of these things were asked for either directly or indirectly by players.
Some like it some do not but even if every other player in the game does these things doesn't mean you need to.

Play the parts of the game you like, and when your bored go play something else.

This game has been stretched way beyond the original designers vision for it much has been added tweaked or just plain cobbled together to hold the players interest and in places it shows.

I've only been playing about 9 months. Bought Prophicies first (for obvious reasons) then bought all the others right after I finished. So I can't relate to people who have been playing since day 1 but for me I would probably have not played much if I only had Prophicies. The other campaigns and expansion has kept me interested and I have enjoyed them very much. Too bad GW2 is taking soooooooo long to come out.

Without the other campaigns and expansion there wouldn't be [shadow form] , and where would we be without that? LOL

I would never have gotten into GW if Prophecies was all there was. It always bored me, and even with now playing through it with a character from a different campaign I'm still 'meh' about it. I didn't get into GW until I'd gotten the rest of the games.

From a PvP point of view, the new expansions deteriorated PvP because of the power creep. Back when it was Prophecies only, a good balanced was the best build and not some meta gimmick.

This is the way I see it Prophs is a country in order to go to a different country you'll need a passport, buying Factions or Nightfall is like paying for your passport allowing you to travel to and in that country. The new games made GW BETTER by adding far more content and new maps. I have hundreds of screen shots that I've taken over the past few years while playing. I've notcied that the people who complain most about how GW isnt as good as it was in the good ol'days are people that mainly do PVP and that's a shame because you're really just enjoying half the game. Personlly I enjoy both, I'll AB to start my session then maybe if I"m up to it and I'm winning and feel lucky I'll jump to FA or JQ or RA. Once I have my pvp mode out of me and talked enough smack in game I'll move to PVE and do some exploring or help one of the newer palyers in my guild with something, I'm rarely bored. By doing this I've noticed one thing, the builds you use in a PVP session are totally different from what you would use in PVE. I'm a title grinder, elite armor collector town lurker AB smack talker PVP goof off. I play it all, sure they change things and more often then not screw it up but we adapt and carry on. I welcome new content even if it is half thought out, figureing it out is half the fun.

I hear all your points, but like I honestly come from such a PVP perspective. Sure, the new content is good, but a lot of the new skills killed pvp making stuff overpowerful or not powerful enough.

Maybe they should of made the new skills taht comes out with each new expansion only accessible for the new characters, i.e only assasin and rit skills come out for sins and rits

Dead wrong, unless you have yellow fever. Although the bald male monks...lord jesus save us.

I'm primarily a PvE player, started 10 months after release, took a break and returned right before NF came out. I have all 4 campaigns and as Apollo_Smile said before, I view them now all as one game. Taking away any part of it will not only make me feel ripped off, but that a portion of my enjoyment (and occasionally frustrations too ) has been torn off. I agree Prophecies was awesome and some of the aspects of the later games didn't match up to it and made the game somewhat broken, but overall Guild Wars is a pretty awesome game :]

Yea that's the issue. Even if it was fun at the time if they never released any updates the company would have gone under and people would have called them a bunch of retards instead of bitching about how fun the game "used to be".

I used to think like this but then I came to realize that it's not the new expansions that ruined it but the lack of care from ANET. Look at the old updates and you'll see what I meant. I wish they'd keep a decent staff working on GW because if the staff at the moment can't handle an update and a skill update they obviously need more people working there.

TLDR; Game needs more care :(

Absolutely correct. People romanticizing prophecies are out of their mind. Henches sucked big time. 20,000XP for a skill point and skill pricing scaled to infinity, I remember paying 1600g for one skill not to mention the stupid refund points you needed for attributes. Farming consisted of griffins and the troll cave, hardly a golden age. GvG might have been balanced but HA was a madhouse with spirit spam, air spikes, iway and vim trappers nothing balanced was going on there to my recollection.

Each campaign was a great leap forward. EoTN and its rep grind, consumables, and pve skills actually was the first new content to hurt the game imo. PvP is way more balanced now than it was in prophecies, but we have had horrible ups and downs in between.

Not saying prophecies was not a great game, but its the model -T of GW.
